Take Action: Write a Letter to the Editor
One of the most effective ways to advocate for health education is by writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Such letters reflect the opinion of the community and are one of the most widely- read sections of the newspaper. Here's some help to get you started...
"Letter to the Editor" Tips
- Letters to the editor usually range from 150-250 words.
- Keep your letter short and make sure your main point is in the first paragraph.
- Personal stories about health education are always more interesting - but don't include any information you wouldn't be comfortable sharing.
- The most important thing to include is that YOUNG PEOPLE support the Health Education Bill.
- Sign your name and include your phone number and address.
- Be sure to e-mail or send us a copy of your letter.
Here are two SAMPLE letters to the editor:
LETTER #1 - To use if your school lacks comprehensive health education
Dear Editor,
My parents do the best they can to keep me and safe and healthy, but they shouldn't be the only ones to bear this huge responsibility. They are constantly telling me to make the right decisions and I need information to do just that. In my public school, we get a lot of information about American history and literature, but not so much information on how I can stay safe and healthy now and for the rest of my life.
I wish every student in Massachusetts could have access to classes and teachers that inform them about nutrition, physical activity, mental health, reproduction and sexuality and substance abuse. On behalf of teenagers across the state of Massachusetts, I urge you to support the Health Education Bill which makes comprehensive health education part of the core curriculum for Massachusetts Public Schools.
How else, if not through learning, can we make responsible decisions and lead healthy lives? As a teenager, I need and deserve comprehensive health education.
Sincerely,

LETTER #2: To use if your school already has a health education program.
Dear Editor,
I am a student at a public school in Massachusetts, and I want you to know about an issue that is affecting the lives and health of other kids just like me: health education.
I am lucky because my school already has a comprehensive health education program. I have learned how my body works, and how important it is to eat healthy and exercise. I have learned the consequences of drugs and violence, and how I can reduce my chance of being involved in risky situations. I have learned how to communicate better with my family, and what a healthy relationship looks like. I have learned how to keep myself healthy now and in the future. However, not all students are as lucky as I am because not all schools in Massachusetts teach comprehensive health education.
School is supposed to be a place where we learn important information-and what is more important than learning how to take care of our health? School is supposed to be preparing us to become successful as adults- but how can we become successful if we're not healthy? All teenagers need and deserve comprehensive health education.
Sincerely,
