Economics of Health Education

CARE for Youth recently conducted research on the economics of the Health Education Bill. Here are the two studies:

  • Comprehensive Health Education Cost Analysis (PDF 125k)
This report looked at the estimated cost to public schools to implement comprehensive health education programs by analyzing established programs in three different school districts. The analysis found that in each district, comprehensive health education made up less than 2.5% of the total amount spent per pupil, and the costs of health education were significantly less in comparison with other subjects that are already part of the core curriculum.
  • Comprehensive Health Education In Massachusetts: The Economic Impact (PDF 92k)
This report discusses the Health Education Bill and the cost savings this legislation will provide if passed. This report shows that the cost benefits of providing Massachusetts' youth with comprehensive health education will ultimately save the Commonwealth substantial health care costs as well as tax dollars by preventing costly societal challenges such obesity, tobacco use, youth violence, unintended pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases.
